You eat a meal, and a few hours later your stomach feels unusually full, tight, or swollen.
You may start wondering:
“Could something be wrong with my gut bacteria?”
The answer is more complicated than simply saying “bad bacteria cause bloating.”
Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. These microorganisms help break down parts of food that your small intestine cannot fully digest.
That process is normal—and important.
But it can also produce gas.
For some people, the way gut bacteria process food, combined with diet, bowel habits, and how sensitive the gut is to stretching, may contribute to bloating.
